Have you been granted your residency and all you need to do now is finally pick up your physical card? In this post you are about to learn how to make an appointment to pick up your TIE (“tarjeta de identidad del extranjero”) step by step. But not only that! You will also find really useful tips to find an appointment easily (something specially important now that there are virtually none!). Let’s get started.

After the chaotic situation that the pandemic left behind in Spain, the process to pick up your residency card has changed.

Previously, 30 to 45 days after registering your fingerprints you had to directly go to the police station with your confirmation.

At that very moment, you were given your physical card.

However, now the procedure is different, and in order to avoid big groups of people in the police stations and to respect all sanitary measures, you must first make an appointment and attend on the date and time set.

Let’s see how to make this appointment request step by step; as well as some tips that will help you to do it without problems.

Step-by-step process

First of all, you must access the electronic office of the Public Administration (by clicking here).

Once inside, select the province where you are currently living in Spain:

As we have mentioned, this process must be done at your closest police station, so you will need to select this option to activate the drop-down menu.

In “TRÁMITES CUERPO NACIONAL POLICÍA”, select “Policía – Recogida de tarjeta identidad extranjero (TIE)“.

After clicking on “aceptar”, you will arrive at a page where you must enter your NIE or passport, name, and surname:

Then you must select the corresponding police office within the available ones.

You will see that you will be offered different schedules/appointments, and you should choose the one that suits you best from the calendar.

Here it is very common that you do not find an appointment available. In the following section we will explain what to do in that situation.

Finally, you must verify your appointment request with a code that will be sent to you by SMS (so it is very important to enter the phone number correctly when you are asked for all your data).

And your appointment is confirmed!

We recommend that you save and print the confirmation and bring it with you on the day of the appointment.

Remember that only the holder can pick up her card (unless you designate a legal representative through power of attorney).

And if you have any questions or would like our team to find an appointment for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch:

What documents do you need to bring on the day of the appointment?

To pick up your TIE at the police station you will need to submit the following documents:

  • Your Identity Card or passport, which must be the original one and valid on that date.
  • In case you designate a legal representative to pick it up for you, power of attorney. If it is a power of attorney formalized outside Spain, it must be translated into Spanish and duly legalized.

In any case, when you select the procedure you wish to carry out and for which you are requesting an appointment, the next page that will be loaded on the platform will specify the exact documents to be provided on the day of the appointment according to your selected procedure

What should I do if there are no available appointments?

Undoubtedly this is a very frequent situation nowadays with the pandemic; and a situation that generates many headaches for foreigners in Spain.

In this section you will learn different tips to make it easier for you to get your appointment.

So what strategies can you use to finally obtain your precious slot?

  • Refresh the page several times if on the first attempt there are no appointments available (by pressing F5 or with the refresh button on the navigation bar).
  • If you have refreshed several times and there are still no appointments left, we recommend that you try another day. Try booking on different days of the week to maximize your chances.
  • It is also a good idea to try on different times (early in the day, late in the evening, etc.).

Finally, remember that, exceptionally (due to the current difficulty in getting appointments), you do not have to go request it to the same police station that corresponds to your address. You can make an appointment at any police station within your province (which offers higher chances of succeeding).

How to cancel your appointment

It is likely that, for whatever reason, you will not be able to keep your appointment and attend on the fixed day.

In that case, you will have to cancel it.

How to do it? It is very simple.

First of all, you will have to access through the same link to the “sede electrónica”, and follow the process in the same way as when you made the appointment.

Choose your province and the procedure.

Once you have entered your NIE or passport number, you will arrive at the main panel.

This is the panel where you started the appointment request process before, but now you will have to press the “anular cita” button.

Add your appointment confirmation number, press “consultar”, authorize the cancellation, and press cancel appointment again.

Your appointment will be automatically canceled.
