Check the Status of your Citizenship Application Online

check citizenship status online

Would you like to know the status of your citizenship application file quickly and easily? In this article, we will show you how to do it through a government platform created specifically for that purpose, called “cómo va lo mió”. You’ll also find out why you shouldn’t trust that information 100% of the times and which are the alternative ways to check the status of your nationality.

“Cómo va lo mío” is an online platform created by the Ministry of Justice in Spain that enables foreigners to check the status of their nationality file in real time.

Many expats apply for citizenship by residency each year, and it is certainly a long process.

In the vast majority of cases, getting a resolution in less than 1 year is an impossible mission.

Thus, the Ministry of Justice created a special service so that all these foreigners could consult their application status quickly and easily, and most importantly: without the need to leave their house.

This platform is used daily by a large number of people, and although as we will see below it does not always provide 100% accurate information, it is still a completely useful tool.

How to track the status of your citizenship application

In order to use this online tool to check the status of your nationality online, the most important thing is that you must have your file registered. In other words, you’ve received the famous R number.

If you submit your nationality online, this is something that happens automatically. But if you have done it through the Civil Registry, it will be assigned to you at a later time.

Once you have your file number, the first thing to do is to access the platform:

track citizenship status

As you can see, the first thing you should do is entering your NIE number, in capital letters and without any hyphens to avoid a server error.

Just after that, you will have to add your file number after the letter R. As you can see on the right of the box, if the file is from before 2015 you will introduce it with a dash; and if it is from a later date, without one.

It is important to mention that here you should NOT enter the civil registry number, it is not valid. You must add the file number.

The order field will be left blank in the vast majority of the cases.  Only fill it out if your file contains this information.

Once all the data has been entered, you will discover the status of your file, including the date of entry. Basically, the possible statuses are:

Finally, it is worth mentioning that this platform is only valid for nationality by residency and as long as your file number begins with the letter R.

But there’s much more you can do online apart from checking your nationality progress.

You can also see the status of your immigration file, whatever that is.

You can do it in two different ways:

Is the information official and real?

This section is of the utmost importance.

While it is true that this is a very useful tool and that we recommend using it, you must be careful with the information it displays.

Firstly, because we are talking about purely informative information, and not legal. That is to say, we cannot take it as 100% official or use it in that way.

That is why we sometimes find discrepancies.

In other words, what we see in the file status does not correspond to reality all of the times.

In some cases, you can see that your file is “in qualification” when in fact it has already been resolved in favorably.

Hence, in most cases where there is an “error” or the information does not correspond to reality, it is usually because the information is not updated in real time, it experiences a certain delay.

So don’t believe 100% what it says.

It is an informative and, as we have said, unofficial or legal portal.

We as lawyers can verify the veracity of that information, and tell you exactly the actual status of your file. So if you need to know the current status, do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

Which are the other alternatives to check the status of my nationality file?

“Cómo va lo mió” is only one of the options available to check your citizenship status.

But there are many more, as indicated below.

What are those alternatives?

You can check the status through the website “carpeta ciudadana”, using a digital certificate. On this website, you will be able to check almost all the files opened with the administration (not only citizenship). Access it here.

You can also go to the Ministry of Justice headquarters in Madrid and ask in person. In that sense, the civil registry would NOT work for the same purpose.

You can also fill out the contact form on the Ministry of Justice website so that a public servant can respond to you by email with the nationality status, which he or she will check manually. Here is the contact form.

Another very useful option is to call the citizen’s service number from the Ministry. You will simply need to give your NIE to receive the information. If you do not have a registration number, we recommend that you use this route, as you will be given one; in addition, you will be informed of the status of the file. The number is 902 007 214 – 91 837 22 95.

Finally, the safest and most convenient option of all: contacting a lawyer. Our team is ready to help you check the status of your nationality or immigration file. We will give you detailed and updated information in record time:
